Shopify vs WooCommerce for a store in Pakistan

Choose around the orders your team needs to manage, not just a theme you like. Payment setup, maintenance and custom features can change the decision.

Start with the person running the store

If your team wants a hosted storefront and a defined admin workflow, put Shopify on the shortlist. If the business already uses WordPress and needs an ecommerce workflow within that site, investigate WooCommerce. In either case, nominate the person who will update products, process orders and arrange technical support.

Neither platform makes every custom requirement automatic. Bring a representative product, its variants, your delivery process and any seller roles into the discussion before choosing.

Check Pakistan payment eligibility first

As checked on 7 October 2026, Pakistan is not listed among Shopify Payments supported countries. Recheck the official list before launch. Discuss an eligible payment provider and the documentation it requires instead of assuming a payment logo means your business can accept that method.

For either platform, write down your intended collection methods, account eligibility, settlement process and refund handling. If you plan cash on delivery, include courier collection and reconciliation in the operational brief. Ask to test the actual agreed method before accepting the store.

Compare the ongoing responsibilities

Use current Shopify pricing for plan details. WooCommerce describes updates, backups and plugin conflicts in its maintenance and troubleshooting guide. Include these responsibilities in the quote.

Write custom features as customer journeys

For my Loto.pk Shopify project, the brief included seller product submissions and a WhatsApp contact number that changes to the relevant seller. That is more specific than asking for a marketplace design. A useful check is: open a seller product, choose WhatsApp and verify the recipient.

This project shows the kind of requirement I discuss; it does not mean every Shopify theme includes these features. Read the Loto marketplace walkthrough. If you need order confirmations and tracking updates, scope those separately with ecommerce automation.

Use a small test before committing

  1. Provide one simple product and one with your most complex variants.
  2. Agree the payment and delivery methods your business can actually use.
  3. Test an order, cancellation and customer enquiry on a phone.
  4. Check who receives notifications and who can update product data.
  5. Review recurring charges, account ownership and support responsibilities.

A convincing demo should answer those questions. A visually impressive homepage alone does not show whether the store suits your operation.

Make a shortlist from your brief

Compare Shopify development if the hosted store workflow fits. Discuss WordPress development if your existing content site and editing requirements are central. For a cost comparison, use the Shopify quote guide and ask for the same feature scope in both proposals.

Send your current URL, sample products and the one workflow the store must support through the project brief. That gives us a useful starting point for a recommendation.
